Sandwiches are a bread-based backbone of everyday life. Much like pizza, folks around the world have their own variations of the humble sandwich. From Bahn Mi in Vietnam, to Gyros in Greece, the options are many (and delicious)!
Here are our top 5 ideas for sandwiches reinvented as pizzas!
Lox cream cheese bagel
A staple of busy New Yorkers, the lox cream cheese bagel is unrivalled in style and taste. Served fresh from your local deli, nothing beats the salty-creamy combo of brined or smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers and lemon. These Nordic flavors are perfect for breakfast or brunch, and of course, pizza!
The BLT is a firm favorite in the UK and USA, it’s no surprise – pop culture references are commonplace, and it’s even got its own national month AND day. Variations of the BLT have existed since the early 1900s, with roots tracing to the American railways. However, calling it by its initials didn’t become popular until the 70s. Typically served on white sandwich bread slathered with mayo, and stuffed with crispy bacon, sweet tomatoes, and juicy lettuce. A mouthwatering, simple sandwich.
The famous bacon cheeseburger has been around since the 1960s, when Dale Mulder of A&W restaurants invented the classic, salty treat. He noticed customers frequently requested bacon alongside their cheeseburger, and decided to put it on the menu for good. Beef patties (single or double!) housed in a soft bun, topped with American cheese, crispy bacon, tangy burger sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. What a treat!
Perhaps the most indulgent on the list, the almighty French Dip sandwich. Surprise surprise, there are conflicting stories about who invented the French Dip sandwich, with two rival restaurants in Los Angeles laying claim to its origin in the early 1900s. A French Dip is traditionally a french bread baguette (as given in its name) filled with hot roast beef, topped with Swiss cheese and cooked onions. The dip comes from the pots of gravy and hot mustard that’s served alongside, and softens the crusty French baguette. Dreamy, right?
The Olivieris are credited with the invention of the Cheesesteak back in the 1930s. They started as hot dog stand owners, but one day took an Italian roll and added steak and onions to it. With popularity soaring, they opened a restaurant and developed the favourite as it is today: thinly sliced Ribeye steak, soft onions, and Provolone cheese. Common toppings include hot sauce and black pepper.
