Green Bean Casserole with Fried Onions
This classic green bean casserole from Ooni Ambassador Mike (@pizzainthesac) is great to prepare the day ahead of your big festive feast. Simply keep covered in the refrigerator overnight and fire up in your Ooni pizza oven the next day. The added mushroom and crispy french fried onions give this dish a delicious meaty texture.
Ooni Cast Iron Skillet Pan
10.5oz (300g) fresh green beans
3-4 mushrooms, cubed
5oz (140g) cream of mushroom soup
4.5oz (125g) whole milk
Pinch fresh ground black pepper
5.2oz (150g) french fried onions
Top and tail your green beans, then cut by 3 into smaller chunks. Cook in salted boiling water for 5 mins, then drain and add the beans to a large mixing bowl.
Add the mushrooms, mushroom soup, and whole milk. Season with salt and pepper, then top with a good handful of french fried onions. Stir well to combine.
Grease your Cast Iron Skillet Pan with butter and pour the mix directly into the pan. Use a spatula or back of a spoon the spread the mix out evenly. Don’t worry about any excess liquid, as this will evaporate in the heat of the oven.
Cover the pan with aluminum foil and either cook right away, or leave overnight in the refrigerator for use the next day.
When you’re ready to cook, fire up your Ooni pizza oven. Aim for 500˚F (260˚C) on the stone baking board inside. You can check the temperature inside your Ooni quickly and easily using the Ooni Infrared Thermometer.
Place the pan at the farthest corner from the flames. Cook for 20 minutes, turning the pan every 5 minutes or so. After 20 minutes, remove the aluminum foil and top with an extra handful of french fried onions. Return the pan to cook uncovered, for 2-3 minutes until the top is golden brown and crisp to your liking.
Remove the pan and serve right away alongside your festive feast!
